Today’s learners face an uncertain present and a rapidly changing future that will demand far different skills and knowledge than were needed in the 20th century. Our collective future depends on how well young people prepare for the challenges and opportunities of 21st century life.
Many of today's global problems are just too complex to be solved by one specialized discipline (think global warming or overpopulation). These multifaceted problems require integrated, multi- and trans-disciplinary solutions.
The integrated learning brings deep understanding of at least one field, but has the capacity to converse in the language of a broader range of disciplines. This requires a sense of curiosity and a willingness to go on learning far beyond the years of formal education.
The University of Haripur is the first to introduce integrated curriculum programs. The programs will offer variety of multidisciplinary courses which will place additional emphasis on developing skills such as critical thinking, insight and analysis capabilities along with in depth learning of the major/core subject of specialization.
Integrated program includes variety of courses for early three to four semesters before opting for specialized courses. The students will have the opportunity to change discipline at this stage, if decided to do so, which is an advantage of integrated curriculum program apart from many others.
The ideal worker of the next decade considered to be "T-shaped": horizontal line as a way to represent the breadth of knowledge while vertical line depth of knowledge or specialized area.
T-shaped skills are built around the mixture of both depth of specialty and breadth of understanding across various disciplines or areas of study.
