Department of Horticulture

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in general and Hazara Division in particular is blessed with the climate that is congenial for the cultivation and production of myriad Horticultural Crops (Fruits, Vegetables and Ornamental Plants). Horticulture produce of this region is being transported to distant markets throughout the country. Inter alia, Haripur district is hub of ornamental nurseries which are not only providing variety of ornamental plants to the masses but also providing employment opportunities. Geographical location of Haripur is unique as it is adjacent to industrial estates i.e. Hattar Industrial Estate, Gaddon-Amazai Industrial Estate, Islamabad Industrial Estate, Government and private colleges and Universities (COMSATS, University of Arid Agriculture, Hazara University, Mansehra etc). Agriculture is the major profession providing livelihoods to the local populace. The Hazara region possesses immense potential for the improvement in Agriculture field especially the fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants production. The Department Horticulture will play its due role in harnessing the potential of the areas.

The Department of Agriculture (Horticulture) was established in 2008 in Hazara University at its Haripur Campus, which later on was upgraded and declared as University of Haripur. Horticulture is one of the leading disciplines. Horticulture department is actively involved in the uplift of community in terms of human resource development through applied research and training in areas of fruits, vegetables, ornamental plant production, landscape designing and post harvest management. The teaching and research activities of the staff is supported by two laboratories, 02 acres of research farm and Horticulture nursery.
The department has adopted a three pronged approach, imparting high quality education, conducting problem-oriented research and transferring technology to solve problems of horticultural crops particularly in the province. The highly qualified teaching faculty provides a stimulating academic environment to the students to pursue their study programs leading to B.Sc (Hons), M.Sc (Hons) and Ph.D. degrees. At the movement there are 22 students enrolled in B.Sc(Hons) Horticulture Program, 25 in M.Sc (Hons) and 8 in PhD Horticulture program. The students are required to have studied basic biology and introductory Horticulture courses for specializing in various disciplines of Horticulture i.e. Pomology, Olericulture, Floriculture and Landscaping. The department has been successful, in providing trained manpower of Horticulture graduates, both in public and private sectors who are actively involved in research and development as well as in solving the problems faced by the farming community. The department concentrates on problem oriented research throughout the province aimed to promote Horticulture crop production and their quality through various management practices.
We offer diverse courses in various disciplines of Horticulture at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. We are maintaining a research farm at University level for students’ research and different field experiments by faculty members working on research projects. To strengthen our research capabilities we have signed a MoU with the Awan Nursery Farms located in the vicinity of the Haripur University. Similarly, linkages have been developed with Qarshi Industry located at Hattar Industrial Estate.Qarshi Industry is located on 120 acres of land, mostly occupied by gardens with hundreds of varieties of fruits, ornamentals, medicinal and aromatic plants. The industry has a well developed herbarium and a tissue culture laboratory. The microbiology and quality testing laboratories at Qarshi are ISO-17025 accredited from Norway. Faculty members and students community of Horticulture Department work in close coordination with Qarshi Industries, thereby providing practical knowledge to the academia.
In additions to teaching at university level we have planned to impart trainings to farming community and other stakeholders on nursery management and certification system, landscape designing, seed production and vegetable forcing.

The presence of food and herbal industries at Hattar and educational institutes in Haripur district and its nearby surroundings, demands the development and fortification of Horticulture department in the University of Haripur. This department will surely fetch the attention of student community and will go a long way in providing quality education enabling the youth to acquire technical skills and play their due role in the development of Green sector at national level.
